Chroma key is the technique of filming in front of one flat colour, usually green or blue, and then replacing that colour with a different picture. Removing a green screen and keying out a green screen are the same thing. This tool is a chroma key that runs online, in your browser.

Can I delete a green screen without green screen software?

Yes. Green screen software such as Premiere Pro, After Effects or DaVinci Resolve does this with a keying effect you set up by hand. Here there is nothing to install: the page does the keying itself and gives you a normal MP4 you can use anywhere, including in those editors.

Does it work as a blue screen remover too?

Yes. It finds whichever screen colour fills the frame, green or blue. To choose the colour yourself, click the colour square beside Replacing, then click the screen in the preview.

Can it remove a video background without a green screen?

No. This tool removes one flat screen colour. It does not cut a person out of an ordinary room, so the video needs a green or blue screen behind the subject.

Can I export the video with a transparent background?

No. The result is an MP4, and MP4 video cannot hold transparency. Choose the background you want in the tool and it is built into the video. A common trick is to choose a plain colour here and key that out later in your editor.

Does my video get uploaded?

No. The video is read, keyed and saved by your browser on your own computer. It is never sent to us, which is also why there is no upload wait, even for a large camera file.

What video files work, and how long can the video be?

MP4 and MOV files up to 10 minutes long and 8 GB, which covers footage straight off most cameras and phones. The result is an H.264 MP4 at the size of your video, up to 1920 pixels on its longest side, so a 4K video comes out at 1080p.

Does the video keep its sound?

Yes. Ordinary AAC sound is copied across untouched. Cameras often record uncompressed sound instead; Chrome and Edge convert that to AAC for you, and Firefox cannot, so in Firefox the tool tells you the result has no sound rather than handing you a silent video without warning.

Why does part of my subject look see-through?

Anything close to the screen's colour is treated as screen, so green clothing in front of a green screen disappears with it. For a shiny object or a pale edge that has picked up green light, lower Edge softness. For shadows or creases in the screen that still show, raise Strength.

Which browsers does it work in?

It is tested in Chrome (Windows, Mac, Android), Edge (Windows) and Firefox (Windows, Mac). It needs a browser that can decode and encode video inside the page, and a long or 4K video needs a computer's memory.

Use your own image

Light the screen evenly, stand clear of it
