How do I remove the background from a video?

Do I need a green screen?

Can I blur the background of a video instead of removing it?

Yes. Choose Blur and set how strong it is. The person stays sharp and the room behind them goes soft, like a camera's portrait mode. The person is taken out before the blur, so their colours don't smear into a glow around them.

Can I change the background of a video to a picture?

Yes. Choose Image and pick a JPG, PNG or WebP. It is scaled to fill the frame, so a picture the same shape as the video works best: wide for a wide video, tall for a vertical one.

What kind of video works best?

One or two people, facing the camera, clearly in the shot: a talking head, an interview, a presentation. It finds people, not objects, so something held up to the camera can come and go. It struggles when the person is small in a wide shot, when someone out of focus is in the foreground, or when something right in front of the lens hides the face. Can I export the video with a transparent background?

No. The result is an MP4, and MP4 video cannot hold transparency. To place the person over something else in your editor, choose a plain green background here and key that out in the editor.

Does my video get uploaded?

No. The AI runs in your browser, on your own computer. The video is never sent to us. The first time, the page downloads the AI model (about 28 MB); after that it loads from your browser's cache.

What video files work, and how long can the video be?

MP4 and MOV files up to 10 minutes long and 8 GB. The result is an H.264 MP4 at the size of your video, up to 1920 pixels on its longest side, so a 4K video comes out at 1080p.

Does the video keep its sound?

Yes. Ordinary AAC sound is copied across untouched. Cameras often record uncompressed sound instead; Chrome and Edge convert that to AAC for you, and Firefox cannot, so in Firefox the tool tells you the result has no sound rather than handing you a silent video without warning.

Which browsers does it work in?

It is tested in Chrome (Windows, Mac, Android), Edge (Windows) and Firefox (Windows). It needs a browser that can run the AI model and decode and encode video inside the page.
