How to transcribe a video in Premiere Pro
- 1
Open the Text panel. Choose Window › Text, then the Transcript tab.
- 2
Transcribe the sequence. Click Transcribe (or Transcribe Sequence) and pick the transcription language. Premiere Pro writes the transcript and labels the speakers, which you can rename.
- 3
Fix any mistakes. Click into the transcript and correct names and words it misheard.
- 4
Export it or make captions. Use Export transcript to save it as a file, or Create captions from transcript to put it on a caption track.
To skip the waiting later, Premiere Pro can transcribe clips automatically as you import them; turn it on in the transcription settings.
Export the transcript
In the Transcript tab, choose Export transcript. Premiere Pro saves the transcript as a file you can share, check, or bring into another project with Import transcript.
Turn the transcript into captions
Choose Create captions from transcript. Premiere Pro splits the transcript into caption lines on a caption track, where you can edit the text and style them. The full walkthrough is in how to add captions in Premiere Pro, and moving captions are in animated captions in Premiere Pro.
Edit the video by editing the transcript
Premiere Pro can also make a transcript for text-based editing. Select sentences in the transcript to find, select or remove that part of the video, which is quicker than scrubbing through long interviews.

CaptionX is our Premiere Pro extension. It transcribes your sequence in 100 languages, lets you review and edit the transcript, then puts captions on your timeline in the style you pick, from plain subtitles to word-by-word animated styles. It has a free plan.
