DVD Subtitles

Why IDX/SUB subtitles need converting

DVDs store subtitles as small pictures, and ripping tools save them as a VobSub pair: a .sub file with the pictures and an .idx file with their times, colours and languages. A DVD player or VLC shows them, but editors, video sites and many TVs and media servers only take text subtitles such as SRT.

This converter reads the words in each picture with optical character recognition (OCR) and writes them into an SRT file at their original times. A line that appears more than once is read once.

How It Works

How to convert IDX/SUB to SRT

Step 1

Add the .idx and .sub files

Drop in both files of the pair. If the .idx lists several languages, pick the track you want.

Step 2

Convert to SRT

Each subtitle picture is read with OCR, several at a time, and keeps its original timing.

Step 3

Check and download

Look over any lines marked to check, then download the SRT.
