Remove Silence in DaVinci Resolve Automatically
Remove silence from your DaVinci Resolve timeline automatically. CaptionX finds the silent parts of an audio track, shows you what it will cut, and builds the cut in a new timeline with the video kept in sync. It works in the free version of DaVinci Resolve.

How to remove silence in DaVinci Resolve
- 1
Open CaptionX from DaVinci Resolve
In DaVinci Resolve, click Workspace › Scripts › CaptionX, then choose Silence Remover.
- 2
Pick the audio track and click Analyze
CaptionX exports that track's audio and finds every silent section.
- 3
Review what will be cut
You see how many silent sections were found and roughly how much time will be removed, before anything changes.
- 4
Click Apply Cuts
CaptionX copies your timeline, removes the silent sections from the copy and closes the gaps. The new timeline opens, named after the original with [Silence Cut] added.
Auto cut silence in DaVinci Resolve: what happens to your timeline
- It works on one audio track at a time: the one you pick. Music or other tracks are left as they are in the new timeline.
- When that track has video that goes with it, the video is cut at the same places, and sound and picture are linked again.
- Titles and generators on the video track being cut can't be moved by a script. CaptionX tells you how many it left behind so you can copy them from the original timeline.
- Nothing is deleted. If you don't like the result, delete the new timeline and your original is still there.
Delete silence, pauses and dead air: tuning the cut
The defaults suit a person talking to camera. If the cut feels too tight or leaves too much air, open Advanced before you analyze:
- Voice Sensitivity: lower catches quieter speech, so fewer real words are treated as silence.
- Min Silence to Cut: the shortest pause that gets removed. Half a second by default.
- Speech Buffer: how much is kept either side of each cut so word endings aren't clipped. 100 milliseconds by default.
A silence remover for the free version of DaVinci Resolve
You can cut silence by hand: play the timeline, razor each pause and ripple delete it. That is how jump cuts are usually made, and on a long talking-head video it is one cut after another. The free version of DaVinci Resolve doesn't offer a way to do it for you: in DaVinci Resolve 21 its Timeline › AI Tools menu is switched off unless you have Studio. CaptionX does the same job from the Scripts menu, which the free version includes.
Once the pauses are gone, the same app can add auto captions to the new timeline.
Questions
- Does the silence remover work in the free version of DaVinci Resolve?
- Yes. CaptionX opens from the Scripts menu (Workspace, then Scripts, then CaptionX), which the free version of DaVinci Resolve has too. It also works with DaVinci Resolve Studio.
- Does it change my original timeline?
- No. The cut goes into a new timeline with [Silence Cut] added to its name, and that timeline opens when the cut is done. Your original timeline is left exactly as it was.
- Does the video stay in sync with the audio?
- Yes. When the audio track has video that goes with it, CaptionX offers to cut that video track as well, and that option is ticked by default. The matching pieces of sound and picture are linked again in the new timeline.
- What about clips at a different frame rate from the timeline?
- They are cut on the right frame. We test 23.976, 25, 29.97 and 30 fps clips on 24, 30 and 60 fps timelines. A clip that is slower than its timeline can't fill every length exactly, so the kept part gives up one or two frames at the edge of the silence instead of leaving an empty frame.
- Can I control how much is cut?
- Yes. Under Advanced you can set the voice sensitivity, the shortest silence to cut (half a second by default) and the buffer kept at each cut edge so the ends of words aren't clipped (100 milliseconds by default).
- Is it free?
- A free CaptionX account includes 3 silence cuts. A Pro plan removes the limit. Analysing a track and reviewing the result doesn't use a cut; a cut is counted when you apply it.
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. CaptionX exports the audio of the track you chose and sends only that audio to be analysed in the cloud. The cutting itself happens in DaVinci Resolve on your computer.
