Key Takeaways

  • Free DaVinci Resolve plugins exist: AutoSubs and Reactor are free and open source, and CaptionX, Snap Captions 2 and MotionVFX each have a free tier.
  • Check what a plugin needs before you install it. Some, such as Snap Captions 2, only run in DaVinci Resolve Studio.
  • There are three kinds: OFX plugins for effects, scripts that open from Workspace › Scripts, and Fusion plugins.
  • One of these is ours. CaptionX is our plugin; the rest are other companies', with prices as their sites listed them on October 12, 2026.

DaVinci Resolve OFX plugins, scripts and Fusion plugins: the three kinds

"Plugin", "plug-in", "extension" and "add-on" all get used for the same thing in DaVinci Resolve. In practice there are three kinds, and they install and open differently.

  • OFX (OpenFX) plugins. Effects you apply to a clip: looks, glows, film grain, noise reduction. Sapphire, Continuum, Dehancer and Neat Video are OFX plugins.
  • DaVinci Resolve scripts. Tools that open from the Workspace › Scripts menu and work on your timeline for you. CaptionX and AutoSubs open this way.
  • Fusion plugins and templates. Tools, titles and transitions built for the Fusion page. Reactor installs them.

DaVinci Resolve subtitle plugins and AI plugins

The free version of DaVinci Resolve can't create subtitles from audio by itself (how to add subtitles in DaVinci Resolve covers what it can do). These plugins use AI transcription to make them for you.

DaVinci Resolve Studio plugins: which ones need Studio

Some plugins rely on features that only DaVinci Resolve Studio has. Snap Captions 2 is the clearest example here: its site says it works on DaVinci Resolve Studio 19.1 and above, and not on the free version.

Others run in both. CaptionX opens from the Scripts menu, which the free version has too, and we tested it in the free version of DaVinci Resolve 21. If you are on the free version, read the "Needs" line before you pay for anything.

Questions

Are there free DaVinci Resolve plugins?

Yes. AutoSubs and Reactor are free and open source. MagicScript and MagicEarth are listed as free on the Magic Toolkit site. CaptionX has a free plan, Snap Captions 2 has a free version (it needs DaVinci Resolve Studio), and MotionVFX gives away some free elements.

What kinds of DaVinci Resolve plugins are there?

Three main kinds. OFX (OpenFX) plugins add effects, such as Sapphire, Continuum, Dehancer and Neat Video. Scripts open from the Workspace › Scripts menu, such as CaptionX and AutoSubs. Fusion plugins and templates add tools to the Fusion page, and Reactor installs those.

Do DaVinci Resolve plugins work in the free version?

It depends on the plugin, so check what each one asks for. CaptionX runs in the free version of DaVinci Resolve: we tested it there. Snap Captions 2 says it needs DaVinci Resolve Studio 19.1 and above.

What is the best subtitle plugin for DaVinci Resolve?

For the free version of DaVinci Resolve, CaptionX: it adds animated, editable captions in 100+ languages without Studio. If you own Studio and want a one-time licence, look at Snap Captions 2. If you want free subtitles made on your own computer, AutoSubs.

What is Reactor for DaVinci Resolve?

Reactor is a free, open-source package manager for Fusion made by the We Suck Less community. It installs Fusion tools, templates and scripts that other users have shared.

What is an OFX plugin?

OFX, or OpenFX, is a standard for video effects plugins. An OFX plugin made for DaVinci Resolve adds its effects to Resolve, where you apply them to a clip like any built-in effect.
