AutoSubs for DaVinci Resolve: what it is

AutoSubs is made by Tom Moroney. Its project page sums it up as "Local-first AI subtitles. No cloud, no subscription, no data leaving your machine." The code is MIT-licensed.

You open it in DaVinci Resolve from Workspace › Scripts › AutoSubs. It transcribes your timeline with speech models that run on your computer (Whisper and several others, downloaded from its model manager), can label who is speaking, lets you pick or build a subtitle style, and sends the styled subtitles back to Resolve. It can also export SRT or plain text.

It runs on Windows, on Intel and Apple silicon Macs, and on Linux, and can be used without DaVinci Resolve at all. Its page notes one limit for Mac users: the Mac App Store version of DaVinci Resolve is not supported.

When AutoSubs is the better choice

  • You want subtitles for free, with no limit and no account.
  • Your footage must not leave your computer. AutoSubs transcribes locally; CaptionX sends the audio of your timeline to the cloud.
  • You work offline, or on Linux.
  • You need speaker labels, for interviews and podcasts with several voices.

When CaptionX is the better choice

  • You don't want to download and manage speech models, or your computer is slow at running them. In our tests a 3 minute 48 second timeline was transcribed in 22 seconds, and that doesn't depend on how fast your computer is.
  • You want animated captions: word-by-word styles such as Word Pop and Word Fill, added as titles you can still edit in DaVinci Resolve.
  • You want the other tools in the same app: it removes silence, translates captions into 89 languages and corrects eye contact.
  • You want to check and fix the transcript before any captions are placed, in 100+ languages.
